The Cuban Research Institute (CRI) continued the tradition of convening scholars engaged in the study of Cuba and Cuban-Americans by hosting its 8th Conference on Cuban and Cuban-American Studies. The event was held February 11-13, 2010. The overarching theme of the conference, “Cuba 2010: An Island in a Global World,” addressed on the current political, economic, cultural, and social dynamics on the island and the diaspora in light of a changing world. As in the past, the conference was interdisciplinary and international in scope.
This year there were over 140 participants in 31 concurrent panels covering a broad range of topics such as literature, cinema, art, history, and social and political issues. Panelists represented a wide gamut of institutions in the United States, Puerto Rico, Spain, France, Mexico, Venezuela, and Cuba. As part of the conference program, on the evening of February 11th, the CRI hosted a screening of the award-winning documentary “Cuba: El arte de la espera,” about the return of a Cuban exile to his small hometown formerly dominated by the sugar milling operations of the United Fruit Company. Filmmaker Eduardo Lamora introduced and discussed the film. This screening was the U.S. premiere of the documentary.
The conference was cosponsored by the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Miami and free to FIU and UM faculty, students, and staff (ID required).
CRI is a preeminent program of the Latin American and Caribbean Center in FIU’s School of International and Public Affairs. It is one of the nation’s leading institutes for research and academic programs on Cuban and Cuban-American issues. Since its founding in 1991, the institute has produced an exceptional level of research and public programs in the field, blending scholarship and the singular resources of the Greater Miami community.
