Re: Cuba Travel

This week the United States government reestablished diplomatic relations with Cuba. This action, together with the removal of Cuba from the State Department's list of countries that sponsor terrorism, which took place earlier this year, removes the prior limitations on FIU and other public universities in Florida to use university dollars to travel to Cuba.

The removal of the Florida travel restrictions means faculty members may engage with colleagues on the island, as well as plan research and educational programming, including study abroad trips, in line with our academic mission.

Your travel must be consistent with the requirements for general licenses established by the federal government, or if not, a special license must be obtained, in accordance with the amended regulations announced by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Department of Treasury.

Additionally, please remember to follow the same procedures that we use for work in any other nation.

You may consult the U.S. State Department's website for travel-related information.
