The Cuban Research Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Denisse Delgado Vázquez as Visiting Scholar between July 1 and August 31, 2019. During her stay at FIU, Denisse will be conducting research on "The Cuban Diaspora's Increasing Role in the Context of Economic Change on the Island."

Among her research goals, Denisse proposes to identify the sociodemographic characteristics of remittance senders from the United States to Cuba, as well as to explain the ways sociocultural remittances change the knowledge, values, identities, lifestyles, and habits of Cubans living on the Island. To accomplish these goals, she will examine the evolution of Cuban-American remittances in recent years and analyze the information on remittances collected by the FIU Cuba Poll. To complement this analysis, she will conduct semi-structured interviews with both remittance senders living in Miami and remittance recipients living in Havana. This mixed-methods approach will contribute to a more holistic understanding of the impact of remittances and the increasing role of the Cuban diaspora in the process of economic changes on the Island.

Denisse Delgado Vázquez is a Ph.D. student in Public Policy at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She earned a master's degree in social development at the Catholic University of Murcia, Spain, and her undergraduate degree in Sociology at the University of Havana. She has had numerous visiting scholarships, fellowships, and academic residencies, including at Harvard University and the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She has published several book chapters and articles in professional journals in the United States, Argentina, and Cuba.
