CRI Hosts Short-Term Visiting Scholar from Mexico

The Cuban Research Institute is pleased to host the visit of Jenny Macías Chaveco, who will conduct archival research on the photographic representation of Cuban migrants in the United States for her Ph.D. dissertation in Communication at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. She proposes to compare the media images of the Cuban migratory process in Cuba and the United States. Jennifer will be in Miami between August 9 and 13, 2021, focusing on the news coverage of the 1965 Camarioca boatlift, the 1980 Mariel exodus, and the 1994 balsero (rafter) crisis. She will review various U.S. journalistic media, such as The Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and USA Today.

Jenny Macías Chaveco is a Ph.D. candidate in Communication at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. She holds a master's degree in art studies from the same university, as well as a bachelor's degree in social communication from the Carlos Rafael Rodríguez University in Cienfuegos, Cuba. She has presented her work in several professional conferences in Mexico and Colombia.
