CRI Announces 2023 Eliana Rivero Scholarships

Every year, the Cuban Research Institute (CRI) offers the Eliana Rivero Scholarship to promote Cuban and Cuban American studies at FIU. This year, the scholarships will support presentations by FIU faculty members and graduate students at academic conferences related to Cuban and Cuban American studies. The award covers up to $500 per person to offset the costs of airfare, lodging, meals, and other educational expenses.

The following persons received the 2023 scholarships:

  • Dr. Elaine Acosta González, CRI Visiting Scholar, will participate in the roundtable on "Forging Panethnic Allegiances: Hispanic Caribbean Communities in Three Gateway Cities—Miami, New York City, and Orlando." This session will be held at the International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) in Vancouver, Canada, on May 24–27, 2023.
  • Katie Coldiron, Digital Archivist & Project Manager at the Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab and Ph.D. student in History, will present her paper "Un nido de espías: A History of Cuban Research at Florida International University." She will attend the annual conference of the Southeastern Council of Latin American Studies (SECOLAS) in Antigua, Guatemala, on March 22–26, 2023.
  • Richard Denis, Ph.D. student in History, will present his paper "Confronting Authoritarianism: Cuban Print Media and the Politics of the Press, 1952–1958." He will attend the annual conference of the Southeastern Council of Latin American Studies (SECOLAS) in Antigua, Guatemala, on March 22–26, 2023.
  • Michele Mileusnich, Ph.D. student in Modern Languages, will present her paper "Food and Cuban National Identity." She will participate in the conference of the Southeast Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures in Savannah, Georgia, on April 13–14, 2023.
  • Dr. Daniel Pedreira, Adjunct Professor of Politics and International Relations, will present his paper "Chinese Vases in Latin America: Former Presidents as Agents of Democracy." He will participate in the annual conference of the Florida Political Science Association in DeLand, Florida, on April 22, 2023.
  • Elisa Rómulo Borges, Ph.D. student in Global and Sociocultural Studies, will participate in the roundtable on "Forging Panethnic Allegiances: Hispanic Caribbean Communities in Three Gateway Cities—Miami, New York City, and Orlando." This session will be held at the International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) in Vancouver, Canada, on May 24–27, 2023.
