CRI Announces 2024 Eliana Rivero Scholarships

Every year, the Cuban Research Institute (CRI) offers the Eliana Rivero Scholarship to promote Cuban and Cuban American studies at FIU. This year, the scholarships will support presentations by FIU faculty members and graduate students at academic conferences related to Cuban and Cuban American studies. The award covers up to $500 per person to offset the costs of airfare, lodging, meals, and other educational expenses.

The following persons received the 2024 scholarships:

  • Dr. Elaine Acosta González, CRI visiting scholar, will participate in the roundtable on "Hispanic, Latino, Latinx? When Do Hispanic Caribbean Migrants and Their Descendants in the U.S. Adopt a Pan-Ethnic Identity?" This session will be held at the International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) in Bogotá, Colombia, on June 12–15, 2024. She will also participate in two other panel sessions on "New Migrant Waves from Latin America: Causes, Dynamics, and Impacts of the Displacement of Cubans, Venezuelans, and Salvadoreans in Four Countries of the Region" and "The Agency of Civil Society in the Social Organization of Care: Lessons from Latin America."
  • Katie Coldiron, outreach program manager, Digital Library of the Caribbean, and Ph.D. student in History, will present her paper "El Laboratorio: Latin American Studies in Miami" at the International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) in Bogotá, Colombia, on June 12–15, 2024.
  • Gina Gómez, Ph.D. student in Global and Sociocultural Studies, will participate in the roundtable on "Hispanic, Latino, Latinx? When Do Hispanic Caribbean Migrants and Their Descendants in the U.S. Adopt a Pan-Ethnic Identity?" This session will be held at the International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) in Bogotá, Colombia, on June 12–15, 2024.
  • Verónica González and Ximena Valdivia, librarians, FIU Green Library, and master's students in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, will present a joint paper titled "Unlocking the Rhythm: Enhancing Access to Cuba's Musical Heritage through Transformative and Inclusive Archival Practices" at the Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries (ACURIL) Conference in Georgetown, Guyana, on May 12–14, 2024.
  • Dr. Catherine Mas, assistant professor of history, will present a paper titled "Cuban Apes, American Empire, and the Ethical Frontiers of Medical Research" at the American Association for the History of Medicine (AAHM) conference in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 9–12, 2024.
  • Ariel Pérez Lazo, Ph.D. student in Modern Languages, will present a paper titled "The Discussion of Identity in Cuba (1923-1956) and Its Relationship with Latin America: Its Repercussion to the Present" at the International Congress of Hispanic Literature and Studies in San Sebastián, Spain, on June 26, 2024.
  • Elisa Rómulo Borges, Ph.D. student in Global and Sociocultural Studies, will participate in the roundtable on "Hispanic, Latino, Latinx? When Do Hispanic Caribbean Migrants and Their Descendants in the U.S. Adopt a Pan-Ethnic Identity?"
