This map forms part of a larger research project, made possible with a Global Learning Faculty Fellowship Grant from the Office of Global Learning at Florida International University. Census data show that Cuban Americans are concentrated in two main areas within Miami-Dade County: the city of Hialeah in the northwest of the county and several cities in the southwest, known colloquially as La sagüesera, especially Westchester, Sweetwater, and Kendale Lakes.
Mapping Culture in South Florida was a research project investigating immigration and cultural patterns in Southeast Florida (Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties), a region of 5.7 million people in 2013, where nearly half of all inhabitants (2.6 million) were born outside the United States. This site was created by the Digital Media Studies graduating class in fall 2013 at FIU's School of Journalism and Mass Communications: Louis Castillo, Romina Herrera, Sherezade Rodríguez, and Christine Tormey. The instructor of the class was Dr. Moses Shumow, then an assistant professor of journalism and broadcasting at FIU.
