Jaime Canavés, M. Arch., is professor in the Department of Architecture at Florida International University.

Jaime Canavés has taught at FIU since 1978. He received his master of architecture (urban and regional planning track) and bachelor of architecture from the University of Florida. He also has an associate of arts degree from Miami Dade Community College. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and has served on national and international juries for the Americas.

Professor Canavés is the founder and director of Bienal Miami + Beach, the School of Architecture Practice (SOAP), and FIU’s Walk on Water Race + Competition. He originated the latter match in 1989 as an assignment for his course dealing with materials and methods of construction. The competition challenges students to create shoes that will allow them to sprint across the 250-foot lake behind the library at FIU's Modesto A. Maidique campus. Professor Canavés has been honored by the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for Leadership in Arts and Architecture and by the AIA Florida/Caribbean Design & Honor Awards.
