CRI Community Advisory Board Member to Receive Professional Distinction

The National Association of Cuban-American Educators (NACAE) has named Dr. Carmelo Mesa-Lago, a member of the Community Advisory Board of the Cuban Research Institute, as "Educator of the Year 2013." NACAE is honored to present this distinction to Dr. Mesa-Lago for his brilliant academic trajectory and in recognition of his invaluable contributions to the study of economic and social changes in Cuba.

Dr. Mesa-Lago is Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Economics and Latin American Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. He is the author or editor of 82 books and 275 journal articles or book chapters on the Cuban economy, comparative economic systems, and the economics of social security in Latin America.

The prize will be awarded during a lunch sponsored by NACAE on Saturday, December 14, at 12:00 PM, at the Big Five Club, on 600 SW 92nd Ave., Miami, Florida. Dr. Mesa-Lago will give a lecture titled "Education in Cuba: Past and Present." NACAE will also award the scholarship "Gastón Fernández de la Torriente" to a student chosen through a contest. The cost of lunch per person will be $45.
