Tania Cepero López
Tania Cepero López, M.A., is Associate Teaching Professor of Writing and Rhetoric in the Department of English at Florida International University.
Born in Matanzas, Cuba, she grew up in Cojímar, the small coastal town made famous by Hemingway in The Old Man and the Sea. She left Cuba in 1998, after completing two years of undergraduate course work towards a B.A. in English Literature and Language at the School of Modern Languages of the University of Havana. After her arrival in South Florida, she earned a B.A. in English from Florida Atlantic University, and later an M.A. in Literature from Florida International University.
She teaches foundational and upper division undergraduate writing courses such as "Writing about the Exile Experience" (which she developed) and "Writing as Social Action." For the last few years, she has also volunteered as an Exchange for Change facilitator at Homestead Correctional Institution (HCI) in Florida City, where she has taught classes such as "Writing and Resilience" and "Writing as Social Action." She is also the coeditor of Don’t Shake the Spoon: A Journal of Prison Writing, Volume 4. Her professional interests include literature of exile, community writing, writing and social justice, translingual theory and practice, and prison writing.
