Guadalupe García
Guadalupe García, Ph.D., is Associate Professor in the Department of History at Florida International University.
Dr. García specializes on Havana and the history of cities and colonialism in Latin America and the Caribbean. Before joining FIU, she was an Associate Professor of History at Tulane University, where she was also affiliated with the Roger Thayer Stone Center for Latin American Studies and Africana Studies.
She earned her Ph.D. in History at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She also holds an M.A. in Latin American Studies from California State University, Los Angeles, and a B.A. in Political Studies and Literature from Pitzer College.
Her essays and reviews have appeared in the Journal of Latin American Studies, Cultural Studies, the American Historical Review, and the Hispanic American Historical Review. Her fellowships and awards include a Distinguished Fellowship at the CUNY Grad Center’s Advanced Research Collaborative and research and digital fellowships at the John Carter Brown Library in Providence, Rhode Island. She has also held a Transatlantic Research Fellowship at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. Professor García is currently at work on several projects on Cuba, one being a book project that explores the use of digital humanities and interrogates how the use of space in cities like Havana can be used to counter the logic of the colonial archive and expand our contemporary understanding of urban areas.
Dr. García’s first book, Beyond the Walled City: Colonial Exclusion in Havana (2016) begins with the founding of the city in the early sixteenth century and extends through the end of the U.S. military occupation in 1902. It explores the relationship between the city and Spanish colonial rule in Cuba. Among its contributions, the book illustrates urban-based patterns of imperial rule and argues that colonialism in the Caribbean (and neocolonialism beyond it) was not simply concentrated in the institutions, disciplines, and discourses of the Spanish empire. The book is based on archival research in Cuban, U.S., and Spanish collections.
In 2022, Dr. García received the President’s Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Teaching at Tulane University.
